The Israeli military says it has launched new operations around Jenin in the occupied West Bank, where two Palestinians have been killed in a series of deadly attacks on Israelis in recent weeks.
The army carried out operations in various parts of the North West Bank, mainly in Jenin, on Sunday, looking for two relatives of Raid Hazem, the perpetrator of an attack on Thursday in Tel Aviv in which three Israelis were killed.
The exchange of fire with the army yesterday injured 17-year-old Mohamed Zakarneh, who succumbed overnight, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced.
Thousands of mourners attended his funeral in the Jenin refugee camp this morning, including masked men shooting in the air.
Abu Muadh, a spokesman for the Palestinian Authority, said in a statement that the camp was “in a state of emergency” and called on local fighters to “mobilize” to “face an invasion” by Israeli forces.
Israeli forces arrested 17 Palestinians in the West Bank today, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.
Strikes were also declared in Jenin and Bethlehem, further south in the West Bank, where two Palestinians were killed in separate incidents.
There have been four attacks in Israel since March 22, the first two by Israeli Arabs linked to the Islamic State and the second two by Palestinians of Jenin descent. A total of 14 people were killed in these attacks.
According to an AFP report, 14 Palestinians, including attackers, have been killed in violence since March 22.
