Mikhail was born to a family of peasants in Stavropol territory on 2nd March 1931. Mikhail spent his early years driving the combine harvester owned by his father, a former member of the Russian Army. His parents were both agricultural workers and therefore were poor. Hence, Mikhail faced several different hardships during his childhood.

 

Personal Life

Mikhail Gorbachev got married in 1953 to a Russian philosopher and activist, Raisa Maximovna Gorbacheva. The couple had their daughter in 1956, who was named Irina Mikhailovna Virganskaya. Gorbachev was married to Raisa from 1953 until her death in 1999 due to Leukemia. 

 

Political Career and Net Worth 

Due to his hard work, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. After graduating high school, he applied and got accepted into the Law School of Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious universities.

 

Before joining the university, Gorbachev was a member of the Komsomol, a Communist Organization for the youth, and due to his membership in this league, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1952. After acquiring his law degree in 1955, he moved to Stavropol, where he was appointed the First Secretary of the Komsomol Territorial Committee, from where he continued to rise to higher posts.

 

 Mikhail continued to work hard and advance his political career, rising to different posts and being appointed to several higher positions. He became a member of the Politburo in 1980 and hence became the youngest member of the Politburo. In 1985, Mikhail was appointed as the General Secretary of the Communist Party.

 

 

Gorbachev was extremely successful in his post and is considered to have had a significant impact on the Soviet Union’s political structure. He brought about a change that had yet to be seen in the region. Due to his peaceful ideologies, he was elected as the Executive President of the Soviet Union in 1989, and he continued to improve the ties of the Soviet Union with the world by advocating peacefully handled international relations.

 

His new and peaceful ideas for this Soviet Union made him quite prominent and also earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. His experiences with poverty and the problems he encountered when working in the agriculture sector with his father allowed him to have a clear understanding of all the issues faced by a large number of the population. Due to this understanding, when he rose to popularity in politics, he used his platform to solve these issues and significantly impacted the economic struggles of the agricultural workers and farmers.

 

Therefore, he was able to cause a reform in the country, but he also worked extensively to improve the standard of living of the people in his nation. Gorbachev ensured that he prevented his country’s youth from facing the problems he faced during his young years. Towards the end of 1991, the Soviet Union began to disintegrate and fall apart. Hence, due to his disintegration, Mikhail resigned from his presidency in 1991, however remaining active in Russia’s political world.

 

He is still known to be among the Soviet Union leaders that brought reform in the country and had a significant impact on bringing an end to the Cold War. Hence he is kept at a high rank in the Russian political world and is looked up to by many politicians in Russia, and is highly respected due to the service he provided to the nation all those years ago.
