President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday (8) that it is “an immense mistake” for the president of an important country like Argentina not to attend the Mercosur Summit held in Paraguay. He added that the situation is sad for the South American country.
“Those who don’t come are the ones who lose. It’s a huge mistake for a president of an important country like Mercosur not to participate in a meeting with Mercosur,” Lula said in an interview with journalists after the bloc’s meeting in Asunción.
The PT member also mentioned the importance of Argentina for Mercosur and stated that the Argentine people need the bloc.
Amid friction with Lula, Argentine President Javier Milei met with former President Jair Bolsonaro in Santa Catarina on Sunday (7) and did not participate in the Mercosur meeting on Monday.
The Brazilian president also commented on Milei’s participation in a conservative event over the weekend.
“It’s a waste of time to do something so unpleasant on the far right. It’s so anti-social, so anti-people, so anti-democratic, I don’t know what people gain by participating in this,” he said.
