The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, said this Monday (4) that he will dismiss all foreign ministry employees involved in the Argentine vote to end the economic and commercial blockade against Cuba, at the United Nations (UN), last week .
“Not only did this cost the chancellor her job [Diana] Mondino, but right now we are doing all the work to open a case against all those responsible and fire them”, said Milei in an interview with the Argentine channel “Ciudad Magazine”, in which he described employees involved in the vote as “traitors to the country ”.
In the vote, held last Tuesday (29), 187 countries, including Argentina, voted in favor of ending the embargo on Cuba. The United States and Israel opposed it and Moldova abstained.
Upon learning of Argentina’s position at the UN, last Wednesday (30), the Argentine president decided to dismiss his chancellor and appointed the current ambassador to the United States, Gerardo Werthein, to the position.
In a statement, the Casa Rosada said that its country “categorically opposes the Cuban dictatorship and will remain firm in promoting a foreign policy that condemns all regimes that perpetuate the violation of human rights and individual freedoms.”
In the interview, Milei stated that one of the pillars of his electoral campaign was the defense of the alignment of Argentina’s foreign policy with the United States and Israel, and that, in votes, the country cannot take a position against these countries. “We had to be there [ao lado dos EUA e Israel]not on the other side”, he argued.
For the Argentine president, the officials involved in the Argentine vote to end the blockade are “in love with international bureaucracy” and “live a parasitic life”.
He also attributed the majority vote against sanctions to the “woke” agenda. [termo que faz referência à consciência sobre questões raciais e de justiça social]the UN Agenda 2030, which establishes economic, social and environmental goals for countries, and the 2045 Pact, which includes issues such as the eradication of poverty and hunger and the fight against climate change.
“This is the ‘woke’ agenda within the 2030 Agenda or the 2045 Pact, which is to advance individual freedoms, in which a group of fatally arrogant imbeciles think they can lead the lives of the rest. I will not allow that”, he guaranteed.
Milei also accused public officials involved in the vote that contradicted the Casa Rosada’s stance of treason. “I will fire all these people who were involved in this decision, I think they are directly traitors to the country,” he said.
“We are looking at the legal format to fire them and make them pay. Foreign policy is set by the president, you can’t go and vote for anything because you think so. If you [quer] vote for what you want, you have to win the elections”, he concluded.
