Milei sends third letter to Lula and confirms participation in G20 summit

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, sent a new letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirming his participation in the G20 summit to be held in Brazil in November.

THE CNN found that the letter, dated September 18, accepts the Brazilian invitation and says that Argentina is ready to contribute to the success of the meeting. According to sources who saw the document, the communication speaks of shared interests between the two countries.

The recent letter, initially revealed by the Argentine newspaper La Nación, is the third sent by Milei to Lula. The first was sent even before the Argentine took office. In the letter, Milei invited the Brazilian president to the event, which Lula did not attend, due to all the criticism made towards him by Milei during the election campaign.

Like the first, the second letter was delivered to Brazilian Chancellor Mauro Vieira by the head of Argentine diplomacy, Diana Mondino, in April. The communication, according to sources heard by the CNN was extremely informal and suggested a meeting with Lula, and was never responded to by the Brazilian president.

The third contact occurred despite multiple public demonstrations by Milei of trying to mitigate hostility against Lula. Already as president, Milei refused to apologize to the Brazilian president and again called him “corrupt” and “communist”, as he had done during the election campaign.

The Argentine president also reposted, on social media, several publications that there would be a dictatorship, persecution and tyranny in Brazil.

In July, instead of participating in the Mercosur summit in Paraguay, Milei went to Brazil, for the Conservative Political Action Conference in Balneário Camboriú (SC) and met with former president Jair Bolsonaro. At the time, Milei did not request a meeting with Lula.

In a recent speech, Milei said that Brazilian justice is dependent on the PT and that the blockade of X by minister Alexandre de Moraes could only be supported by a “tyrant”.

Despite the discomfort generated by Milei’s behavior, the Lula government helped Argentina on at least two occasions this year.

In May, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Mines and Energy expedited the release of an emergency shipment of natural gas from Petrobras, avoiding an energy collapse in the neighboring country.

In August, Brazil took over the care of Argentina’s embassy in Venezuela after Maduro expelled Milei’s diplomatic corps from the country. Caracas tried to revoke authorization for representation, but Brazil refused and has been negotiating with Venezuelans for months so that opponents sheltered in the Argentine embassy can leave Venezuela safely.
