Miley Cyrus makes a moving story about struggle against drug addiction

Singer and actress Miley Cyrus, 32, revealed that she had faced a relapse before gaining her sobriety. The star explained that the fight against dependence on alcohol and other substances was necessary for its artistic and personal transition.

In an interview with Apple Music 1’s The Zane Lowe Show, the artist reported that her difficulties with addiction directly influenced her work, and used as an example the song “Flowers”, which became one of the greatest hits of her career.

“I know I needed to fall. I just … I needed. It would never have happened otherwise. I just wouldn’t be sitting here. There were times at that stage … I am not proud of them. It was definitely not my best moments, nor my best work, none of that. But all this led me to write ‘flowers’, which turned out to be a kind of key that opened the door for all the cure.”

The singer referred to the period around the release of the 2020 Plastic Hearts album, while still fighting issues related to alcohol abuse and other substances.

“I learned this about myself over the years. Sobriety is like my God. I need her, I live for her. I mean, it completely changed my life,” he said.

“Flowers”, released in 2023, was the flagship of the album “Endless Summer Vacation”, and earned the singer his first Grammy Awards: Best Solo Pop Performance and Recording of the Year in 2024.

“I think somewhere inside me, I needed to hold a trophy and feel, for a moment, that I have something in the hands that seems like a true achievement. And that’s why I went to Grammy; in fact, it was an act of healing.”

Miley confessed that she hardly attended the ceremony for anxiety. “There was a part of me that fought against it, the fact that somehow it mattered to me. And then, when I got my Grammy, I thought: look, when you search me on Google, now it says’ Miley Cyrus, a Grammy winning artist.”
