Military police officer dies shot by colleague in uniform at concert hall in Rio

A military policeman died after being hit by a colleague in uniform in the early hours of Saturday (5), in Barra da Tijuca, west of Rio de Janeiro. The shooting took place inside a concert hall, when the two agents were off duty.

Douglas Silva would have been hit by colleague Michel Dutra, who was arrested in the act and gave a statement to the Civil Police. The occurrence was registered at the 16th Police Station, in Barra da Tijuca, as manslaughter, when there is no intention to kill.

The Military Police (PM) reported that the Corregedoria da Corporación opened an “investigation procedure” to investigate Silva’s death. The case was forwarded to the Military Judiciary Police Station (DPJM), which monitors the investigations.

Almeida was off duty when he passed the Viaduto dos Marinheiros and would have reacted to the approach of criminals. According to the Military Police, gunfire was exchanged and a man, identified as Wagner Silva Souza, was shot dead at the scene of the confrontation.

The policeman was wounded by a gunshot to the head. He was taken to the Corporación Central Hospital, in the Estácio neighborhood, in the central region of Rio, but he did not survive his injuries.

A team from the 4th Battalion of the Military Police, from São Cristóvão, was called to the event. Almeida had been with the corporation since 2011 and was assigned to the Coordinator of the State Security Integration Program. He leaves a wife and a three-year-old son.

The Capital Homicide Police Department investigates the case. Agents carried out forensics at the scene and are conducting investigations to clarify the crime.

The burial of corporal Fábio Alves de Almeida will take place this Sunday (6), at 1:30 pm, at Jardim da Saudade Cemetery, in Sulacap, west of the state capital.
