The government of Rio de Janeiro announced that it will start on Monday (30) the installation of portable operational cameras in the uniform of the military police officers of nine PM units.

The equipment, which will be attached to the vests of the agents, begins to be used by the military of the 2nd BPM (Botafogo), 3rd BPM (Méier), 4th BPM (São Cristóvão), 6th BPM (Tijuca), 16th BPM (Pottery), 17th BPM (Ilha do Governador), 19th BPM (Copacabana), 23rd BPM (Leblon) and 1st Independent Military Police Company (Laranjeiras). All these units are subordinate to the 1st Area Police Command.

To start using the new equipment, the government of Rio will hold an event at Praça do Lido, in Copacabana, starting at 9 am on Monday (30).

Police violence

The ceremony that marks the use of body cameras takes place six days after the police operation in Vila Cruzeiro, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, which left at least 23 dead.

According to the Military Police (PM), the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), the Federal Police (PF) and the Federal Highway Police (PRF) carried out a joint action in the favela in the region.

The objective, according to the corporation, was to arrest criminal leaders hiding in the community, including people who came from other states, such as Amazonas, Alagoas and Pará.

The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MP-RJ) and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) established a Criminal Investigation Procedure to investigate the deaths. Bope’s command must send explanations about the operation within ten days.

Social institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) reported the operation to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, an organ of the Organization of American States (IACHR/OAS).

The bodies are asking the commissioner to follow up on the investigations and to collect responses from the authorities about the action that left the second highest number of dead in such an incursion in the state.

The action only caused fewer deaths than the Jacarezinho operation, in May 2021, when 28 people died, according to data from the New Illegalism Study Group at the Fluminense Federal University (GENI/UFF), in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region. .
