The first case of monkeypox – or monkeypox in a dog in Brazil was confirmed in the state of Minas Gerais. According to the State Department of Health, the molecular diagnosis was laboratory confirmed by the Ezequiel Dias Foundation (Funed).
Until then, there was no documented evidence of transmission of the disease from humans to animals or from animals to humans in Brazil. There are two reports in the world, the United States and France, in which the potential transmission from human to animal is being studied.
The five-month-old puppy had contact with a confirmed human case for the disease in the municipality of Juiz de Fora. The animal started to show symptoms on the 13th, with itching, presenting characteristic lesions of the disease such as wounds and formation of crusts located on the back and neck.
The patient associated with the contagion is the owner of the animal and began to show symptoms on the 3rd. He was treated at an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Juiz de Fora on the 8th, when a sample of the lesion was collected, the result of which was positive for monkeypox.
According to the secretary, the patient was instructed to keep the animal in isolation and to adopt sanitary measures for the routine of feeding the dog and cleaning the place. Patient and dog are isolated at home and are doing well, according to the regional health department.
The patient’s only home human contact remains asymptomatic and continues to be monitored.
