Minas Gerais could reach dengue peak by March

Minas Gerais is expected to reach its peak in dengue cases by March. The forecast was announced this Tuesday (23) by the Secretary of Health, Fábio Baccheretti.

To date, the state has 32,316 probable cases and 11,490 confirmed cases, in addition to 14 deaths under investigation and one confirmed death. There was also one death caused by Chikungunya, another type of arbovirus also transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

During a press conference, the secretary explained that the explosion of cases was not expected for 2024, as 2023 had already been classified as an epidemic year.

He recalled that the common behavior of dengue is to record an epidemic year interspersed with three years with lower numbers. “This year, we will complete two consecutive epidemic years. This is new,” he said.

According to Baccheretti, most cases are concentrated in the central region of the state. The secretary also recalled that the return of type 3 dengue fever in the country raises an alert for more serious cases of the disease.

The concern is due to the fact that so-called severe dengue generally occurs when a person is infected more than once, which can happen when there is a new serotype circulating.

“We will have a difficult epidemic year in the state of Minas Gerais. There is no doubt about that”, concluded the secretary, citing 600 municipalities with dengue cases so far across the state, with more than 150 of them having an incidence classified as high or very high.
