Minas Gerais puts another 33 municipalities in emergency; total is 374

The government of Minas Gerais put 33 more municipalities in the state in emergency this Thursday because of the storms that are affecting the state and much of Brazil. There are already 374 municipalities in Minas Gerais in emergency due to the intense rains, which have worsened in the region in recent weeks.

The state of Minas Gerais concentrates almost half of the municipalities in emergency throughout Brazil, with 693 affected by the rains, according to a CNN survey, which also pointed to more than 125,000 homeless and displaced people and 59 dead across the country.

Since the beginning of the rainy season, 25 people have died, 26,492 have been displaced and 4,047 have been homeless, according to data updated by the State Civil Defense Coordination (Cedec).

With the worsening of the scenario, the Government of Minas created a Management Committee for Measures to Prevent and Combat the Consequences of the Rainy Period, which counts on the Security Forces and State secretariats to support the affected municipalities.

The Minas Gerais government released more than R$ 1.2 million for the purchase of basic food baskets, personal hygiene kits, cleaning kits, mattresses and dormitory kits and has asked people and companies for help with donations.

Information for donations can be accessed on the website www.servas.org.br or by calling (31) 3349.2400. Cash donations can be made to the state’s Autonomous Social Service.
