Minecraft Developers Petition Against NFTs in Games Gained Only 72 Supporters Worldwide

The petition from the creators of Minecraft, calling on colleagues from other studios to carefully introduce cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens into video games, remains unpopular in the environment.

The Mojang Studios petition has only 72 signatures so far. About it reported Decrypt edition. According to petition co-author Cory Scheviak, five other gaming companies have signed the petition, and Mojang is now verifying their signatures.

The authors of the appeal called on developers to commit themselves not to create games that would contribute to an artificial scarcity of crypto assets, and also not to use energy-intensive cryptocurrencies that harm the environment. According to Cheviak, NFTs are changing the very concept of video games and turning the process of creating them into a pursuit of profit.

Cheviak believes that it is too early to draw conclusions about the attitude of game studios towards cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Right now, Mojang’s main goal is to get as many companies and individuals on its side as possible. Their concern was also expressed in the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). In their opinion, games that operate on the principle of “play to earn” (P2E) cause harm to financial and economic systems.

Despite the small number of signatures, Cheviak believes that in the future they will be able to gather many more supporters around the world. The petition is not limited in time, and sooner or later the developers will realize the harm that the crypto industry causes, Mojang is sure.

Sebastien Borget, co-founder of The Sandbox metaverse, has a different opinion. He stated that in the coming years, every gaming company, from the largest to the smallest, will have products related to cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Earlier, the tax authorities of the United States, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom issued a warning about the risks associated with NFTs.
