The law enforcement agencies of the Komi Republic sent the case of a resident of Syktyvkar, who was engaged in cryptocurrency mining, to the court. He is accused of stealing electricity on an especially large scale.
According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, a 39-year-old resident of Syktyvkar bought more than 400 cryptocurrency mining devices back in 2015. He was the head of one of the organizations and installed the equipment on the territory of his company, illegally connecting it to the electrical grid. Over the past years, according to prosecutors, he illegally consumed electricity in the amount of 5.5 million rubles.
In this case, the damage caused to the power supply organization will fall under the definition of an especially large size. According to Part 2 of Article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing property damage to the owner of the property by deception in the absence of signs of theft, committed on an especially large scale), the Syktyvkar miner faces up to 5 years in prison. Although he can do with forced labor, or even a fine.
However, this is not the largest case of theft of electricity by Russian miners. Back in 2019, a mining farm was discovered in Ingushetia that was illegally connected to the power grid. The owners of this farm managed to use electricity in the amount of over 130 million rubles.
