United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that the mineral agreement between the US and Ukraine is a complete economic partnership that will allow President Donald Trump to negotiate with Russia on a stronger basis.
The measure, signed on Wednesday (30), will give the United States preferential access to new Ukrainian mineral agreements and will fund investments in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
The deal will show the “Russian leadership that there is no difference between the Ukrainian people and the American people, between our goals,” Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business Network.
“The American people do not make money if the Ukrainians do not thrive. So now we are totally economically aligned. And once again, I think this is a strong sign for Russian leadership and gives President Trump the ability to negotiate with Russia on even more solid bases,” he said.
“This is a total economic partnership. It’s not just about rare lands, but also infrastructure and energy. Therefore, there is an opportunity for both sides actually gain,” Bessent added.
The agreement establishes a joint investment fund for the reconstruction of Ukraine while Trump tries to ensure a peace agreement in the three -year war in Russia in Ukraine.
He was signed in Washington after months of negotiations, sometimes tense, with uncertainty persisting until the last moment, with the news of a last minute problem.
