Minibus runs over and kills four people and leaves another 25 injured during procession in Recife

A minibus ran over and killed four people and left another 25 injured, during a procession in the city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, metropolitan region of Recife, in Pernambuco, on Sunday afternoon (31), according to preliminary information from the Fire Department. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

The Fire Department was called at around 5pm and sent eight vehicles to the scene, four ambulances, one rescue vehicle and three operational command vehicles.

Doctors from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) found the four deaths still at the scene, and other injured people who were taken to hospital units in the Metropolitan Region.

Firefighter ambulances rescued and sent three victims (female) to different hospital units. According to Major Rafael Silva, Operations Supervisor and Spokesperson for the Pernambuco Fire Department, he told CNN, “the victims were helped by firefighters , SAMU and by some popular people. There is no way to specify (the number of injured people) due to the different forms of assistance”.

According to information from witnesses to the accident to CNN, the minibus was on line 118- Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada and acted as complementary transport.

“Guys, a tragedy happened here, something unbelievable. Very sad. There was a procession at the Perpétuo Socorro church, a lot of people. Children, elderly people, going down the hill and at the moment they released the minibus to go down, it lost the brake and ended up running over many people”, says the administrator of the Eu Curto page Marcos Freire, in a video published minutes after the accident.

The faithful took part in the III Cristo Vive Walk, promoted by Matriz Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro.

In a post on social media, the city's mayor, Mano Medeiros, reported that he was following the events. “Our teams are already on site, providing assistance to victims and collaborating to ensure all necessary support at this difficult time,” said the mayor.

The governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, also through a social network, expressed solidarity with the victims' families. “My condolences to the faithful and family victims of the collision that occurred today during a procession in Jaboatão, which killed at least four people. Sad to hear the news this Easter Sunday”, Lyra published.

“The incident is under the responsibility of the Prazeres Duty Station. Identification and location of the driver is a priority for the Pernambuco Civil Police. The minibus is part of the complementary transport provided by the City of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, which grants permission”, says a note from the Fire Department.

The Military Police and the Criminalistics Institute (IC) are also on site for investigation.
