The new value of the minimum wage starts to apply from this Saturday (1st). On Thursday (30), the federal government issued a provisional measure (MP 1,091) establishing the value at R$1,212, R$112 more than in effect in 2021. The announcement was made by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) during his weekly live.
With the increase, the daily value of the minimum wage is now R$40.40, and R$5.51 per hour.
The new value resets the official inflation, of 10.74% in 12 months, according to the Consumer Price Index-Broad (IPCA), but there is no real salary increase. The minimum wage is a reference for government expenditures such as social security and social benefits.
The last time the minimum wage had real gain was in early 2019, the first year of Bolsonaro’s term, when he signed a decree updating the floor value in accordance with the valuation policy approved by the Dilma Rousseff (PT) government and valid from 2016 to 2019. Since then, the Bolsonaro government has only granted increases to reinstate inflation.
