Minions: see 5 curiosities about the stars of “Despicable Me 4”

The animation “Despicable Me 4” arrived in Brazilian cinemas this Thursday (4). After five titles in the franchise, the new film will introduce a new member of the family, Gru Junior. Despite being in a peaceful moment, the villain Gru is soon challenged when a criminal mastermind escapes from prison and swears revenge against him.

Even though Gru is the main character of the franchise, those responsible for stealing the show in all the titles are his faithful squires: the Minions. The yellow creatures devoted to the villain have already won two films to call their own. They are: “minions “, released in 2015, and “Minions 2 “, 2022.

In addition to their funny way of speaking and their clumsy way of helping, they are known for their iconic phrases, their love of bananas and their adaptations of famous songs.

1. They have their own language

Despite pronouncing understandable words like “banana”, the Minions have their own vocabulary and language, “Minionese”. To do this, they use grammatical rules from different languages, with elements in English like “Potato” (which means potato), as well as Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian, such as: gelato and “para tu”.

2. All minions are male.

During an interview with The Guardian in 2015, the creator and main voice actor of the characters, Pierre Coffin, revealed that all the minions are male and explained why: “Seeing how dumb and stupid they are, I just couldn’t imagine minions like girls. These little creatures were made to be that way.”

3. The director is one of the main voice actors in the franchise

Pierre Coffin, a Frenchman who co-directed the first three “Despicable Me” films and 2015’s “Minions,” also voices the film’s three main protagonists: golf-loving, spiky-haired lead Kevin, one-eyed Stuart and bald Bob, who is emphasized in the title.

4. There are over 10,000 Minions

In a promotional campaign for “Despicable Me 2”, released in 2013, the film’s official website shared a poster of the animation and asked fans to guess how many yellow characters were under Gru’s command. The answer is impressive: 10,400 Minions!

5. Minions were inspired by the Oompa Loompas

Two co-creators of the franchise revealed that the Minions were inspired by other film and television characters, such as the Oompa Lompas, Willy Wonka’s helpers in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

According to the Daily Times, the directors were also inspired by Jawas from “Star Wars,” as well as silent film stars Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, and cartoon characters from Warner Bros.
