The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, defended this Tuesday the permanence of Silva and Luna in Petrobras and the measures being studied by the government to face the increase in fuel prices.
Asked about a possible change by the president of Petrobras from the position, the minister pondered that any decision depends on President Jair Bolsonaro, but that, in his assessment, the “Management of Petrobras is being correct. It’s not my decision. But Silva e Luna is there because he is competent and extremely efficient,” he pointed out.
“When a government is at the beginning, it is normal for the president to form his team. But now is not the time. This is not the time to make tests, bets. The president will not improvise,” he pointed out, comparing the formation of the government to a football team.
Considered one of the most technical ministers in the government, Bento is responsible for appointing President Bolsonaro for the sector. It was from him that Silva e Luna was nominated to the general director of Itaipu Binacional, where he spent two years, and also to Petrobras, which he has chaired since April 2021.
More recently, the minister also nominated Rodolfo Landim, who was president of Flamengo until last year and is also an oil engineer, to preside over Petrobras’ Administrative Council. In April, the government’s expectation is that Landim will be appointed to the post. The board, in practical terms, has the power to supervise and define the company’s investment plan.

The minister defended the tax and social assistance measures to combat the rise in fuel prices. Currently, the law that sets the ICMS on fuel is in force and eliminates the collection of Pis/Cofins. But, with support from the political wing of the government, Congress is also considering the payment of gasoline and diesel aid to drivers. Asked about the economic impact of these ideas, the minister called it a “political answer” to the problem.
For him, “there is no magic” but, at the moment, these measures “meet the country’s need. We are moving towards providing the country with instruments that avoid fuel price volatility”.
