Minister Márcio França tells CNN that he rules out privatization of the Port of Santos

in interview to CNN this Friday (20), the Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França, ruled out the privatization of the port authority of the Port of Santos, a former objective of the former Minister of Infrastructure and current governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) .

“When we talk about privatizing the Port of Santos, what Governor Tarcísio intended, which was the guidance given by Paulo Guedes and Bolsonaro, was the sale of the port authority. But this model only exists in a single country, Australia, and it showed many difficulties”, said França.

According to the minister, “there is no problem” with public and private cooperation in the management of ports and airports, if concessions are made in specific sectors.

“The port authority will not be [privatizada], but in the Port of Santos, only the port authority is public today, all the other terminals are practically private. What we are studying, and it is possible that this will happen, is having other services that can be privatized, such as dredging, signaling. It is possible to have these private things, as this already exists in the rest of the world”, declared França.

Finally, the Minister of Ports and Airports pointed out that the largest ports in the world are currently managed by the State, and compared the privatization of the Santos port authority with that of the Federal Police.

“Such a strategic matter of national sovereignty is very difficult to imagine a way of privatizing it, it’s like privatizing the Federal Police or the Highway Police,” he said.
