Minister of Agriculture defends measures to contain African swine fever

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Teresa Cristina, defended at an event this Monday (17) the implementation of measures to prevent the spread of African swine fever. A focus of the disease was identified in the Dominican Republic in November 2021.

According to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), Brazil eradicated the disease in the late 1970s. However, its arrival in Brazil could generate a loss of US$ 5.5 billion in the first year after the spread.

Tereza Cristina participated in the inauguration ceremony of Manuel Otero, director general of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on farming (IICA).

“Another initiative is linked to a topic that concerns me a lot, African swine fever. I hope that the guidelines established at the November meeting, and the partnership with IICA, will generate good results in the continental containment of the disease”, he said.

According to Embrapa, African swine fever affects only pigs, but it is highly contagious and has no cure or treatment, resulting in a high mortality rate in affected herds.

The institute’s guidelines for the general population to help prevent the spread of the disease is not to bring animal products or game products from overseas travel.

In the case of producers, it is recommended to comply with health protocols, report any important changes in the animals to the authorities, such as bleeding diseases or suspicious deaths, and pay attention to the feeding of the herd, preventing them from eating human food scraps.

After the identification of the outbreak in the Dominican Republic, studies were carried out to determine the extent of the outbreak of the disease, in addition to carrying out measures to contain and eliminate the current outbreaks.

Still at the event, the minister said that “I count on the leadership of the director-general to continue providing support to regional actions in defense of themes dear to our agriculture, such as free and fair trade and science and innovation as pillars of development. ”.

“The countries of the Americas rely on their competence and tireless dedication so that we can continue to fulfill our important role as food suppliers and environmental service providers for our population and for the world”, said the minister.
