Minister of Citizenship details efforts in rain-stricken cities in Bahia

The heavy rains that have devastated the state of Bahia and part of northern Minas Gerais have already displaced thousands of families and caused at least 17 deaths.

According to the Civil Defense, 286 have been wounded, 4,185 are homeless and 11,260 are homeless. More than 378,000 people were affected by storms and floods.

In this context, municipal, state and federal governments articulate containment actions.

In an interview with CNN, the Minister of Citizenship, João Roma, stated that the federal government works in coordination with the government of Bahia, municipal administrations and volunteers.

“The governor [da Bahia] Rui Costa was with me, with minister Rogério Marinho [Desenvolvimento Regional], with Minister Queiroga, of Health, and Colonel Lucas, who is the national secretary of Civil Defense. We deliberated for the placement, here in Ilhéus, of a joint base of operations between the state government and the federal government [para ter] with this, the improvement of coordination and the effectiveness of actions to minimize the suffering of the population”, he said.

According to Roma, it is important to make families aware that it is not possible to return to retrieve personal belongings and that, at the moment, the focus is on removing them from risk areas.

According to him, a city-by-city survey of homeless families is being carried out.

Rome exemplified some of the specific actions of the federal government: “Now in this effort to coordinate with the state government, for example, we will fund all the fuel for the aircraft that are serving the population, we are serving more than 30,000 food baskets by the Ministry of Citizenship — over the last week, more than 70 tons came here”, he commented.
