Negotiations with the United States will no longer be possible than certain things change, Iran Foreign Minister Araqchi said, according to state media, on Sunday (23). The movement happens while Washington awaits an response to its invitation to negotiates about a new nuclear agreement.
Tehran received this month a letter from US President Donald Trump, giving Iran two months to decide whether to enter new negotiations or face more severe sanctions under Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign.
Although the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, rejected the offer of negotiations for considering her misleading, Iran’s Foreign Minister said on Thursday that Tehran would soon respond soon to the letter’s threats and opportunities.
On Sunday, Araqchi added that Iran does not oppose negotiations for “stubbornness,” but because of history and experience, adding that Washington needs to recalibrate his policy before Tehran participates in the negotiations.
In his first term, Trump removed the United States from a 2015 agreement between Iran and great powers that had imposed strict boundaries to Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
After Trump withdrew in 2018 and restored the sanctions, Iran violated and greatly exceeded these limits on the development of its nuclear program.
“In my opinion, the 2015 pact in its current form cannot be revived. It would not be of our interest because our nuclear situation has advanced significantly and we can no longer return to previous conditions,” Araqchi said.
“The same can be said of sanctions on the other side. The 2015 nuclear pact can still be a base and model for negotiations.”
Western powers accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons by enriching up to 60%, above what they say they are justifiable for a civil program.
Tehran says that the development of his nuclear program has peaceful purposes and respects his commitments under international law.
