Minister of the STJ announces early retirement from the Court

Minister Jorge Mussi, of the Superior Court of Justice, announced this Tuesday (13), visibly moved, his early retirement from the Court. He could continue in office until March 2027, when he will turn 75.

At the end of the session of the 5th Panel, the minister stated that in life there is time for everything, from planting, harvesting, being born, growing, crying and time to come and go.

“My time has come. Yesterday I completed 15 years at the STJ. They were very good. Here is a family, there is harmony. I really enjoyed working here at the STJ, but I turned 70, I would have reached the presidency for seniority, but I think it’s time”, he said.

“It’s time to return to Santa Catarina, my city, my love for the island of magic, to see my friends again. And, from time to time, who knows how to come here and annoy you, because I’m not going to stop working, I’m going to stay there in my state”, he said with emotion.

At the STJ, Mussi was the author of several court decisions. In 2016, he suspended the jury of a businessman accused by the Federal Public Ministry of having ordered the death of judge Leopoldino Marques do Amaral, shot dead in 1999, in Paraguay.

The judge’s body was found in a ditch next to a dirt road that connects the cities of Loreto and Concepción, in Paraguay. The magistrate had denounced, that same year, a scheme for the sale of sentences involving judges of the Court of Justice of Mato Grosso.

In 2018, he accepted the defense’s request and determined that the misdemeanor Carlos Augusto de Almeida Ramos, known as Carlinhos Cachoeira, served his sentence in the semi-open regime.

In 2020, it determined the fulfillment of search and seizure warrants at 12 addresses linked to seven investigated on suspicion of an illicit scheme at the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJ-MG).

Already in September 2022, noting that it was not a case of anencephaly, the minister denied a woman’s request so that she could interrupt the pregnancy of conjoined twins.
