Defense Minister General Paulo Sérgio Nogueira said this Wednesday (8) that the entire process of acquiring generic Viagra pills and penile prostheses by the Armed Forces was conducted in accordance with the rules of public administration.
“Thus, I certify that all Armed Forces acquisitions are governed by honesty, transparency, administrative efficiency, legality, correctness. Any discrepant cases when identified are widely investigated and suppressed. Whether through internal control or external control,” said Nogueira.
Paulo Sergio Nogueira attended the public hearing in the Chamber at the request of deputy Elias Vaz (PSB-GO), who asked for clarification of the contract signed by the Pharmaceutical Laboratory of the Brazilian Navy and the company EMS S/A for the acquisition of 11,213,627 Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra generic) tablets of 20, 25 and 50 milligrams and with manufacturing technology transfer in the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
The Defense Minister also said that the questioned medication is provided for in clinical protocols of the National Commission for the Incorporation of Technology of the Unified Health System (SUS) for arterial hypertension and sclerosis. The prostheses would be in compliance with medical recommendations for pathologies.
“I emphasize that in these cases the acquisition is carried out after medical request and approval by the medical ethics committee. Therefore, the quantities launched in the electronic trading system aim to quote the value of the product, based on maximum quantities calculated with the worst hypotheses of hospital demand”, added the military.
Nogueira also said that the information they have is that there are nine penile prostheses in the Brazilian Army, and that these products and medicines do not only serve active and reserve military personnel, but all users of the agreement with the Armed Forces, which can exceed one million people.
“Like any citizen, military personnel, their dependents, pensioners and other users of the Armed Forces health systems are entitled to specialized medical care. Thus, it has a process for quality consultations and medical, hospital and dental procedures, to which it contributes monthly and co-participates in the costs of procedures, exams and hospitalizations,” he added.
