Minister will call on airlines to tighten rules on animal transport

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, told CNN which will convene a meeting with airlines to discuss stricter standards for the transport of animals.

“We need tougher legislation,” said the minister, who demanded an immediate investigation from the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) into the case of the dog killed on a GOL flight.

Joca, a five-year-old golden retriever, mistakenly ended up in Fortaleza (CE). His tutor was waiting for him in Sinop (MT). The company boarded him on the wrong plane at Guarulhos airport (SP).

According to the owner's family, Joca was left in the sun for several hours without any veterinary assistance. The case generated commotion on social media.

Anac initiated administrative proceedings to determine the reasons that led to the dog's death. “The agency gave GOL three days to respond,” informed Silvio Costa Filho.

Among other information, Anac wants to know the conditions for transporting the animal, sending it to a location other than the contracted location and the conditions for providing this type of service. The objective is to open an inspection process based on the findings.

“May this sad episode serve as a window of opportunity to re-discuss the rules in force and tighten what exists today”, concluded the minister.
