The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Silva (Republicans), announced that the ministry will investigate together with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) the death of the Golden retriever Joca during a Gol air trip.
The announcement was made after a hearing between the minister and representatives from União Brasil, Fernando Marangoni and Rafael Saraiva, and published on social media on Tuesday night (23).
Alongside the president of ANAC, Tiago Sousa Pereira, the minister stated that the causes of the animal's death will be investigated and that the department will take the appropriate measures to penalize those responsible. The agencies also announced the creation of a working group to establish new national rules for the transport of pets.
“We increasingly want, with everyone who defends this cause, to think, alongside Anac, about public policies in defense of the animal cause in Brazil, which is a defense of the entire Brazilian people”, declared Silvio Costa.
Joca Dog
A 5-year-old Golden retriever dog, called Joca, was handed over dead to his owner, this Monday (22), by employees of the airline Gol, which was transporting the animal.
According to information from the company, the dog should have gone from Guarulhos to Sinop airport, in Mato Grosso, where it would meet its owner, but ended up being transported to Fortaleza, in Ceará, due to what the company defined as an “operational failure”.
The case is investigated by the São Paulo Civil Police.
João Fantazzini, Joca's tutor, held the airline responsible for what happened. According to João, the golden retriever's veterinarian had given a certificate indicating that the animal was fit to travel for a period of two hours. Due to the airline's failure, the dog spent seven hours on the journey.
In a statement, Gol informed that it deeply regrets what happened and that it is offering all the necessary support to the animal's owner. “The investigation of the details of what happened is being carried out with full priority by our team”, added the company.
Suspension of animal transport
After the incident, the airline Gol announced, on Tuesday night (23), the temporary suspension of the service for transporting dogs and cats in the aircraft's hold.
The suspension comes into force from this Wednesday (24) and lasts for 30 days. Gol states that this period will be dedicated to completing the investigation of the incident.
The measure only affects transport services in the aircraft hold; the Dog&Cat Cabin service, which allows pets to travel in the cabin with passengers, will continue to operate normally.
According to the company, customers who have already contracted the transport of their animals through the affected services within the 30 days of suspension can request a full refund of the amount paid, including the ticket price.
