Ministry of Health announces opening of 135 beds in the federal network of Rio

The Ministry of Health announced that it will reopen, in the coming days, 135 beds in the federal network of Rio de Janeiro, with 100 in the infirmary and 35 in the ICU. The measure will meet part of the municipality’s claims, which asked for the unlocking of 400 of the approximately 941 federal vacancies out of use in the capital, a number identified in a survey by the Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU).

According to the folder, which did not commit to an exact date for the expansion of supply, 1,700 health professionals will be hired, so that the beds operate to their fullest. The posts and beds will be distributed among the six hospitals managed by the Ministry of Health in the capital of Rio de Janeiro: Andaraí, Bonsucesso, Cardoso Fontes (Jacarepaguá), Lagoa, Ipanema and Servers (Center).

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, highlighted the contribution of the federal network, a legacy from when Rio was the capital of the republic, to face the pandemic. “This network should be a reference in serving the population of Rio de Janeiro and the entire country. The structuring of federal hospitals is essential so that they can provide the right answer for the SUS”, he highlights.

The total number of reopened beds represents only 33.75% of the total requested by the Municipal Health Department, through a letter to the federal government, about three weeks ago. The request requested 250 places at the Federal Hospital of Bonsucesso and 150 at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital, at UFRJ.

This Thursday (27), at a meeting at the Palácio da Cidade, the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), criticized the state of abandonment of the units managed by the Ministry of Health.

“In a network with as many beds as the federal network, it is important that they keep all beds open. This needs to be looked at. Federal hospitals in Rio are abandoned. All of them. We need the federal government and the Ministry of Health to take measures to recover their beds permanently, not just for Covid”, said Paes.

Sought, the Ministry of Health has not yet commented on the mayor’s criticism regarding the treatment given by the folder to health units in the federal network.

On Wednesday (26), Fiocruz released a technical note from the Covid-19 Observatory, in which researchers point out that six states and the Federal District have more than 80% of intensive care beds occupied, a scenario considered critical. The document states that there is a clear sign of a worsening of infections in the country, caused by the Ômicron variant.
