Ministry of Justice demands explanations about alleged toxin in Skittles bullets

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security notified the company MasterFoods Brasil Alimentos, through the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), to call for the recall of Skittles colored candies, due to the alleged presence of titanium dioxide toxin, unsuitable for human consumption.

According to the ministry, the notification was made on Tuesday (2) and the manufacturer has the option to provide clarification, within 72 hours, on the possibility of possible risks to the health and safety of consumers.

THE CNN contacted MasterFoods Brasil Alimentos and is awaiting a response.

According to the folder, the decision was motivated by news in the press that the manufacturer in the United States is being sued because of the presence of the toxin in the product. According to published reports, studies point to health risks and, in Europe, the products would be undergoing a gradual elimination of titanium dioxide, and the use was banned in European Union countries.

The ordinance of the Ministry that deals with the recall determines that the supplier who becomes aware of the possibility that products or services that are harmful or dangerous have been introduced into the Brazilian consumer market must, within 24 hours, inform the secretariat of the of investigations.

The document also determines that, once the investigation is completed, a statement must be presented with the reasons why, if applicable, it will not be necessary to initiate a recall campaign.
