The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) is in progress this Tuesday (21) with Operation 404, fulfilling 30 search and seizure warrants to combat crimes against intellectual property on the Internet in eleven states; Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Pará, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo.
It also has the collaboration of the US and UK embassies in Brazil.
According to the MJSP, those involved captured a closed television signal and, in order to pass it on to subscribers, charged for the pirated service.
So far six people have been arrested, 266 websites and 461 pirated streaming apps blocked, and profiles and social media pages removed.
Estimated losses amount to R$ 306 million per year. The crime committed is the violation of copyright, whose penalty is two to four years in prison, and a fine. And for those who use this type of pirate service, from three months to one year in prison and a fine.
Operation 404 started in 2019, and now it’s fourth edition. The name references the HTTP protocol response code to indicate that the page was not found or is unavailable.
This is one of the main actions of the operation: making criminal services that violate victims’ copyrights unavailable.
