“Ms. Ahtsioglou has obviously learned the art of lying from Mr. Tsipras,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement in response to the position of the SYRIZA finance department head regarding the Power Pass.
As specifically stated “the fact that the Power Pass covers 60% of the increase in electricity tariffs up to 600 euros, again arbitrarily, as not knowing the Greek language, turns it into a horizontal measure of 600 euros, regardless of whether someone had an increase to his account or not”.
In the announcement, it is also noted that “Ms. Ahtsioglou is proposing a socially unfair measure, horizontal, regardless of the burden on households which, according to her calculations, costs 2.5 billion euros for 4.2 million beneficiaries. Again that is, he found money trees that he wants to distribute, without any criteria, burdening all taxpayers”.
It is stated in detail that:
First: 2.5 million natural persons applied to receive a subsidy. How 4.2 million will be subsidized while they applied for 2.5 million, only SYRIZA knows.
Second: The government’s announcements, the relevant law, the relevant ministerial decisions explicitly define a subsidy of 60% on the electricity increase and up to 600 euros. Apparently SYRIZA considers it fair that a citizen who had an increase of 1,000 euros and a citizen who had an increase of 50 euros should receive the same subsidy.
Third: During the period in question (December to May), subsidies have already been given, exclusively for the electricity of the first residence of households 1 billion euros, while in total from September 2021 to July 2022, the total cost of electricity subsidies for households and businesses exceeds 3.5 billion euros. The 260 million euros are in addition to these.
Fourth: The number of applications, but also the amount resulting from the analysis of the accounts, for which consumers have a complete and thorough picture through the statements posted on the Power Pass platform, also showed what was the real perimeter of the problem, as a significant percentage of the increase has already been subsidized. Applications were submitted for 3 million of the 4 million main residence benefits, corresponding to 2.5 million natural persons. The objective calculation, with full transparency, showed that the costs borne by the households for their main residence and the student residence amount to 430 million euros, of which 60% of them, i.e. 260 million euros, are returned.
Fifth: The June extension costs an additional €40 million, bringing the total cost of the measure to €300 million. It is recalled that since May, consumption of more than 300 KWh has been subsidized for all households’ residences, while only the electricity subsidy in July, when the new mechanism was introduced, amounted to 700 million euros.
The above and the fact that the State acts effectively and in a fair way to protect households from the energy crisis can cause embarrassment to SYRIZA, which uses the only weapon it has left: the lie. Unfortunately for him and Ms. Ahtsioglou, citizens will see the money in their account from tomorrow.
