Minority and government parliamentarians differ on Petrobras’ CPI objective

In CNN debate this Friday (17), senator Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN), leader of the minority in the House, and federal deputy Ubiratan Sanderson, deputy leader of the government in the Chamber of Deputies, differed on the objective of opening a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI), as suggested by the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), to investigate the Petrobras .

The statement by the chief executive came after the state-owned company announced a new increase in fuel prices. THE Gasoline rose 5.18%, while the diesel had an increase in the price of 14.26%.

In his speech, Representative Sanderson defended that the National Congress “enter the game” to prevent the correction of the value. “The fuel readjustment today, especially this afternoon, took over the discussion forums from South to North, precisely because the price formation has a direct impact on the inflation index and on the basic food basket. The consumer suffers in the skin, daily, with the readjustment”, he began.

“We always respect good governance and Petrobras’ corporate rigidity, but now we see it as inopportune, inconvenient. You can’t accept a 22% readjustment on diesel in 40 days. The time has come for the Brazilian Parliament to take the field. It is no longer possible to admit another readjustment after the effort we have made to pass a bill”, justified the deputy.

Jean Paul Prates, on the other hand, criticized the fact that the Executive did not act alone to end the rise and believes that the CPI should serve to question the state-owned International Parity Price (PPI) policy.

“This has turned into fuel pandemonium. You can imagine that a government that is the majority shareholder of Petrobras, which has placed all the presidents and directors, say that Petrobras is uncontrollable. First he said: as it is uncontrollable, I will sell. Now, if it sells, it will continue to be even more uncontrollable. Now, as it is uncontrollable, I will do a CPI”.

“I and other senators want to sign this CPI, because this policy [Preço de Paridade Internacional] It’s been since 2017. Let’s take it from the institution of the PPI and try to understand how the government, as a majority shareholder, is afraid of asserting the interests of the Brazilian people”, explained the senator, who stated that the government refuses to exercise such control at Petrobras.

Parliamentarians still differed on the sale of the company’s shares that are in the hands of state capital.
