Mir card users will be able to pay for purchases by simply showing the QR code to the seller

In the fall of 2022, a new method of contactless payment for purchases will appear in Russia without using a terminal and presenting a bank card. Banks working with the Russian payment system Mir will be able to launch a simplified scenario for making payments using a QR code: the buyer will just need to show it to the seller. This is reported by the publication “Izvestia” with reference to the bulletin of the National Payment Card System (NSPK). The press service of the Mir operator officially confirmed the information.

The ability to pay and refund via a client QR code will work from October 25th. The holder of the Mir card will be able to generate a picture on his smartphone in the bank’s application or the branded Mir Pay and present it for reading by a scanner at the checkout of a trading enterprise. Operations will be carried out only after confirmation by the card user. Russian Standard Bank is involved in the development and implementation of the technology, Otkritie is also planning to join the project.

Payment by the buyer’s QR code will become an analogue of the “Fast Payment System” (FPS), which the Central Bank launched in early 2019. It is noted that such a concept will offer a more convenient and faster checkout: the buyer only needs to open the bank’s application and show the ready-made QR code to the seller. Currently, users need to perform a lot more actions: first turn on the smartphone’s camera, then scan the QR code, then open the application and confirm the payment there.
