Miss World crowned amid calls for peace in Ukraine

the Polish Karolina Bielawska was crowned to 70th Miss World this Wednesday (16), with competitors and organizers expressing solidarity with the Ukrainians during a tribute on stage of the televised final.

Bielawska, who works as a model and is pursuing a master’s degree, won the title in Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan, three months after the contest was postponed due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Miss USA, Shree Sainitook first place, while Olivia Yacé from Côte d’Ivoire came in second.

In addition to the usual performances and live trials, the eye-catching ceremony featured messages of support for the Ukraine after the unprovoked invasion of Russia country, which borders Poland.

Jamaican Toni-Ann Singh, who won Miss World in 2019, sang a version of “The Prayer” by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli as those on stage and in the audience held candles aloft.

The words “a prayer for peace” appeared on a screen behind the finalists. The official Miss World Twitter account posted that the performance was part of the pageant’s efforts to “stay with Ukraine”. Organizers also said that more than 7,000 candles were prepared for the show, which was broadcast in more than 100 countries.

In a statement published ahead of the pageant, Miss World Ltd. CEO Julia Morley stated: “We must do something, even if it never seems to be enough to light a candle, if we all light a candle together we can change the world,” inviting people to “shine their light for Ukraine” and post images on social media.

Earlier this week, Miss World organizers posted a video message from Miss Ukraine 2016, Oleksandra Kucherenko. In a virtual set of images of the conflict, she appealed to countries around the world “to support us, close the sky above Ukraine and save the world (from) a nuclear catastrophe”, adding: “Our peace is your peace. ”

The current Miss Ukraine is Oleksandra Yaremchuk, who did not qualify for the final event, is currently in Kiev, the organization said.

Initially scheduled for December, the Miss World pageant was postponed after several people linked to the event – ​​including 23 of the 97 contestants – tested positive for Covid-19 with just a few days left.

Only the 40 semifinalists were invited back for Wednesday’s reorganized event, which was hosted by English singer and TV personality Peter Andre and Mexican singer and actor Fernando Allende.
