Recent missile attacks in Lebanon are causing serious concerns about the security of Beirut International Airport, compromising repatriation operations in several countries, including Brazil.
This is the analysis of professor Augusto Teixeira, specialist in International Relations at the Federal University of Paraíba, in an interview with CNN 360° .
According to Teixeira, the exchange of forces between Israel and Hezbollah, which now also involves the Lebanese army, is marked by the intensive use of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and rockets. This situation significantly complicates the coordination of airspace in the region.
Challenges for humanitarian actions
The professor explains that conflict in airspace creates obstacles to establishing a safe “window of opportunity” so that aircraft can land, board passengers and take off safely. “This obviously demands a very strong articulation of the political and diplomatic field”, says Teixeira.
The complexity of the situation is worsened by the tense diplomatic relations between the countries involved.
The expert highlights that relations between Brazil and Israel are not in a good moment, with President Lula being considered “persona non grata” in Israeli territory. Furthermore, Israel maintains troubled relations with the UN, especially with the organization’s secretary-general.
Given this scenario, Teixeira highlights that ensuring airport security, vital for humanitarian assistance operations, becomes an extremely challenging task.
The situation requires intense diplomatic efforts and international coordination to facilitate repatriation and humanitarian aid actions in the midst of the conflict.
