Missing submarine is a hollow tube with just a joystick inside, looks amateurish, expert tells CNN

Rescue teams reach the fifth day of searching for the submarine that disappeared during an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic.

In an interview with CNN the professor and director of the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (USP), Paulo Sumida said that the vehicle is a “hollow tube” with only a joystick (control with a lever) inside, “it looks amateurish”.

According to him, the submersible has sound systems from the bottom of the sea, in addition to a radio, which allow communication with the surface.

“The strange thing is that it’s not working,” he said.

About the sonar signals picked up by the search teams, Sumida says that it can, yes, mean something.

“At these depths there is not much noise, so it could mean that one of the crew may have tried to communicate,” he said.

However, he points out that it is not enough to locate the submersible.
