Missing Titanic submarine thriller: ‘Knock sounds heard’ during search

The teams searching for the Titan submarine, which disappeared while diving in the wreck of the Titanic, heard knocking sounds every 30 minutes on Tuesday, according to an internal government memo detailing the investigation. Four hours later, after additional sonar devices were deployed, banging could still be heard, the memo said. It was unclear when the bang was heard on Tuesday or for how long, according to the memo, as reported by CNN.

A later update sent out on Tuesday night said more sounds were heard, although they were not described as “bangs”.

“Additional acoustic feedback was heard and will assist in orienting surface media and also indicate continued hope for survivors,” according to the update.

A Canadian P3 aircraft also spotted a white rectangular object in the water, according to the briefing, but another ship due to investigate was diverted to help investigate the acoustic feedback instead.

As the massive search reached its third day, more ships and aircraft joined the mission.

A US Navy spokesman said the military branch is sending subject matter experts and a Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System to assist in the rescue mission of the submarine, which disappeared Sunday morning and as of Tuesday night he had only had 30 hours of oxygen.
