A clandestine shelter with 16 elderly women was closed on Tuesday morning (24) due to the precarious conditions of the place. The house operated in the Liberdade neighborhood, in Salvador (BA). Irregularities such as dirt, infiltration and electricity “catch” were found.
According to investigations by the 3rd Human Rights Prosecutor’s Office of Salvador, the shelter operated on property belonging to another public body. In other words, it was occupied illegally, without legal documentation and in complete disregard of the Elderly Persons Statute.
The closure occurred after a complaint of invasion and illegal occupation of the space emerged. The Public Ministry of Bahia (MP-BA) began an investigation and contacted other agencies about a week ago.
Prosecutor Ana Rita Nascimento said that a 92-year-old woman begged for water. She had to be taken to a hospital by the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) after being found dehydrated. She remains hospitalized.
The case may be treated as abandonment of a disabled person and mistreatment. It is also possible that there are other crimes, such as retention of a magnetic card, fraud and theft.
The relatives of the elderly will be heard and may also be held responsible for the situation. Some inmates will be sent to the homes of relatives who are found or to other shelters in the city.
The action to close the Lar de Idosas Filhas de Dulce also had the support of the municipal Health Surveillance, the Municipal Secretariat for Social Promotion, Combating Poverty, Sports and Leisure and the Civil Police.
