Following the discontinuation of production of Mitsubishi Pajero vehicles at the plant in Sakahogi, Japan, Mitsubishi Motors signed an agreement to sell the plant to paper company Daio Paper.
This is the end of the story that led Mitsubishi to take the Pajero off the production line. Retail sales were lower than expected, and the last time the Pajero was upgraded was more than 15 years ago.
The loss of the plant was inevitable for the Japanese automaker, and the current deal to sell the facility to Daio Paper was aimed at preserving jobs in the local economy. The transaction amount is 33 million dollars. The new owners are converting the facility to produce paper products, including napkins and toilet paper.

The plant’s location in central Japan will give Daio Paper the flexibility to efficiently supply the Tokyo and Greater Osaka regions, which are the country’s major economic centers. Daio Paper owns 30% of the facial tissue and toilet paper market in Japan and the new venture will help the company expand its footprint.
As for the Mitsubishi Pajero, the final series was released on the Australian market last year, which included 800 cars. Now there is talk of a possible collaboration between Mitsubishi and Nissan that could create the next generation model. Presumably, it will be released no earlier than 2024.
