The National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra) launched this week the Libera Meu Xixi campaign, which aims to raise awareness and mobilize society about the rights of trans people to use public spaces such as bathrooms.
Since 2015, the Federal Supreme Court has postponed a judgment that could establish a paradigm and jurisprudence linked to actions that are being processed across the country on the subject and the campaign also asks for the matter to return to the Court’s agenda.
In an interview with CNN Radio socio-educational counselor, black trans woman and activist, Marcella Montteiro, said that there are several reports of violence.
She herself says that she went through a situation like this inside a mall where she was, according to her, “practically thrown out of the place”: “I called the police and lawyers because of the ban on using the public restroom.”
“We have made some advances, but not many, people are more afraid to block use of the bathroom and spaces, because they know they can be sued, because of the wide disclosure.”
Marcella evaluates that “the presence of not only trans, but non-binary people in places where they were not and are not respected has greatly improved.”
Even so, she prefers not to use public restrooms: “It’s a place I don’t go, because of the trauma. I’m afraid security will break down the door and be aggressively removed.”
In the activist’s assessment, “the mixed bathroom would solve the case a lot”, that is, without distinction of gender.
“We don’t want an exclusive bathroom, but rather use the bathroom according to the gender we identify with”, he added.
