As you know, the generation of Nvidia Ampere graphics cards for laptops is very different from desktop cards, which was not the case in the past two generations.
The reason is simple – Ampere cards are significantly more powerful than Turing adapters, but they also consume a lot, so in order to fit new solutions into mobile PCs, Nvidia had to significantly cut the parameters of the cards.
As a result, desktop and mobile cards with the same name can be very different in performance. But how strong – this is what the specialists of the TechSpot resource decided to check. They compared the desktop and mobile GeForce RTX 3070, and in the case of the mobile version, adapters with different TDPs were evaluated. They also added a number of other video cards to this, and it turned out to be a very voluminous and informative comparison.
As always, you can look at the source for detailed tests in different games, but we will select the most important diagrams.
To begin with, you should pay attention to the difference between the mobile versions of the adapter with different power limits. As you can see, it reaches 15-20% on average, sometimes reaching 30%. This once again shows that the choice of a gaming laptop should be approached carefully. Fortunately, Nvidia still obliged laptop manufacturers to provide details about the Ampere adapters.
If we are talking about the difference between desktop and mobile cards, then even in the case of the 115-watt mobile RTX 3070, the desktop card turns out to be 30-35% faster on average, and in some games the difference can exceed 50-60% (in Full HD). If we compare it with an 80-watt mobile card, then the desktop one turns out to be one and a half times faster, and in some games the advantage can reach 70-80%.
As a result, of course, it is impossible to talk about at least an approximate identity of the mobile and desktop RTX 3070 in terms of performance. These are cards of completely different classes, providing completely different performance.
At the same time, in absolute terms, the mobile RTX 3070 still looks very decent, ahead of the desktop RTX 2070 Super by 10-20% (if we are talking about the 115-watt version of the first).
It’s also worth noting that the 80-watt RTX 3070 is roughly equal to the 115-watt RTX 3060, but we’ve mentioned this more than once before.
