The average speed of mobile Internet in Russia continues to decline. This was reported in a study by the TelecomDaily agency.

The study reports a continuing decline in the average mobile data rate in LTE networks since their launch in Russia in 2011-2012. In November 2021, the average mobile Internet speed in the networks of the Big Four (MTS, MegaFon, VimpelCom, Tele2) was 21.7 Mbps, and in February 2022 this figure dropped to 21.1 Mbps.
MegaFon’s mobile Internet turned out to be the fastest – the average speed throughout Russia was 33.2 Mbps. In terms of average and maximum data transfer rates, MegaFon is still ahead of the other three largest Russian operators by 70% or more.
In second place is MTS with 19.2 Mbps, followed by VimpelCom with 18.7 Mbps and Tele2 with 14.2 Mbps.
The main reason is the growth of traffic from operators. However, there is also the impact of sanctions that could limit or stop infrastructure upgrades.
TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov explained:
As is well known, some legacy infrastructure is being decommissioned. But the rest of the equipment, which allows to provide high-quality services, needs constant modernization. A significant amount of Internet infrastructure is built on the equipment of Nokia, Ericsson, etc. How will work with these companies be built now and how much network equipment will cost, taking into account the growth in the value of the currency – this is a question. In a more advantageous position are networks built on the equipment of the Chinese Huawei – most likely, such equipment will continue to be supplied, but its price will also increase. All this negatively affects the volume of investments and the pace of modernization of the network infrastructure, since companies provide their services in rubles and, therefore, receive revenue in rubles. Probably, it is worth thinking about moving the production of network equipment to Russia, or about creating our own capacities, so as not to depend on sanctions or currency fluctuations. In the meantime, we can state that the average speed of mobile Internet in Russia will continue to decline.”
It is noted that the statistics were derived on the basis of tens of thousands of measurements in more than 30 largest cities of Russia using the Megabitus proprietary application, which subscribers themselves install on their smartphones.
