Until September, 131 people were kidnapped in the state of São Paulo in 2024, according to data from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP).
The SSP records cases of “extortion through kidnapping” in the statistics area of its official website. Only between July and September, 45 people were kidnapped in the state of São Paulo.
A recent case that gained repercussion was the kidnapping of model Luciana Curtis held hostage with her husband and daughter for 12 hours, between Wednesday (27) and Thursday (28).
THE CNN found that Luciana, 47 years old, was also a victim of extortion. The criminals did bank transfers with the victims’ cell phones, while holding the family captive.
The number recorded in the third quarter of this year is practically equal to the mark from the same period in 2023, when the SSP confirmed 44 cases of kidnapping in SP.
However, compared to the first nine months of last year, there was a drop of approximately 19% in registrations. As of September 2023, 150 people have been kidnapped, according to the SSP.
In São Paulo, kidnapping incidents are forwarded to the Police Station for Repression of Extortion with Restriction of the Victim’s Freedom, responsible for investigations in the state.
Model kidnapped for 12 hours
Luciana Curtis, her husband Henrique Drenge and one of their daughters were held captive for 12 hours in the north of São Paulo.
They went last Wednesday (27) while leaving a restaurant in Lapa, west of São Paulo. The family was held hostage on land in Brasilândia.

The kidnappers fled after noticing the police approaching, and abandoned the model, her husband and daughter there on Thursday morning (28). During the escape, the family car was taken.
The Anti-Kidnapping Division of the Department of Strategic Police Operations analyzes security cameras from the place where the family was approached to try to locate the kidnappers. Until the last update, no one had been arrested.
In a statement, the secretariat informed that the police are committed to identifying and arresting those involved in the kidnapping. The incident was registered at the 3rd Police Station for the Suppression of Extortion with Restriction of the Victim’s Freedom, which investigates the facts. “Other details will be preserved to guarantee the autonomy of police work”, he adds
