Moderate Ali Larijani Runs for Iran's Presidency – Grand Ayatollah's Son Has PhD in Philosophy

The former speaker of Iran's parliament, the moderate Ali Larijani, ran today in the June 28 snap presidential election to succeed Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash, state media said. The registration of candidates for these elections, which were normally to be held in 2025, began yesterday, Thursday, at the Ministry of the Interior and will end on Monday. Larijani, 66 and known for his moderate views mainly on foreign policy, submitted his candidacy this morning, according to images broadcast on state television. A former member of the Revolutionary Guards, the Islamic Republic's ideological army, he has held numerous important positions within the system over the past three decades.
