Modern slave traders have thrown migrants into the sea off Djibouti

Traffickers dumped dozens of refugees and migrants off the coast of East Djibouti in East Africa earlier this week. at least 20 of them drown, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Overloaded boat with over 200 immigrants sailed from Djibouti on Wednesday afternoon to Yemen, said the IOM, which belongs to the UN system.

Shortly after departure, the traffickers threw about 80 people into the sea. According to survivors, many children were on board.

For IOM, the episode is another proof that “criminals continue to exploit desperate people trying to make a living to make a profit by ignoring the consequences“, States a press release he published.

Survivors receive medical care at an IOM facility in Djibouti.

At least 50 refugees and migrants died in similar incidents in October.

Every year in East Africa, tens of thousands of young Africans, especially those from war-torn countries such as Somalia or Ethiopia, travel to Djibouti to try to cross the sea to Yemen and from there to wealthy Arab countries in search of work.

Many trapped in Yemen trying to reach Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates lose their lives trying to return to their home countries.
