THE NASA released an image made by the IM-2 Nova-C landing module, called Athena, Launched to the moon last Wednesday (26) . In the selfie made by the instrument, Planet Earth appears from the background .

The trip is expected to end next Thursday, March 6, in Mons Mouton, a plateau near the South Lunar pole. The intended landing site is in the central region of one of the possible landing areas of the Artemis 3 mission.

The region is considered crucial for the current lunar space race, as scientists believe it is rich in water ice deposits, a resource that can be converted to breathable air, drinking water or even fuel for rockets.

Athena was built by Intuitive Machines, a company based in Houston who, so far, is the only one in the private sector on Earth to have a safe landing on the moon. Learn more about the mission

In the Astronomy Picture of the Day project, the US agency selects an image a day to portray an extraordinary scene related to space-such as a Spacex rocket forming a “giant space fish” in the sky and cometes it w/2024 G3 (Atlas) crossing the sky and disappearing behind a hill.
