A Moldovan soldier serving on the demarcation line separating the territory from the breakaway region of Transnistria was killed on Thursday under unclear circumstances, more than 30 years after the war between Moldovan armed forces and separatists. A statement from the Ministry of Defense clarified that the soldier was “mortally wounded” due to a shot “from the weapon in his possession while performing his duty at his post”. According to the same source, the police and forensics are conducting an investigation into the incident. On the line separating Moldovan territory from Transnistria are deployed militaries from both sides, as well as Russian troops in a peacekeeping role, following the brief war in 1992, soon after the collapse of the once-Soviet union. The Moldovan government vows that Transnistria will be reintegrated into its territory in the future, however, bloody incidents along the line of contact are rather rare.
