Moldova: The state of emergency is extended in the shadow of the war in Ukraine

Moldova’s parliament voted today to extend a state of emergency declared in the country for another 60 days, after the government said it still needed expanded powers to deal with the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Natalya Gavrilitsa cited the continuing risks to energy security, the security of the country’s borders and the need to manage refugee flows from Ukraine. “The risks for Moldova due to the war in Ukraine remain high. The government needs expanded powers,” Gavrilica said.

The extension of the state of emergency will take effect on August 8.

About 500,000 refugees have crossed the border since late February, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. Of these, just over 100,000 remained in Moldova, a small country with a population of around 2.6 million.

Moldova’s parliament initially approved the temporary state of emergency soon after the war in neighboring Ukraine began and extended the measure in April and June.
