Moldova welcomes Commission’s recommendation for EU candidate status

Moldova welcomes the European Commission’s recommendation to grant it candidate status, which it expects to be approved by European Union leaders next week, the country’s president said today.

“The recommendation is based on the perception that our country will make more efforts in areas such as judicial reform, the fight against corruption, public administration and human rights,” said Maia Santou.

“This is an important moment for the future of the Republic of Moldova and the hope that our citizens need,” Santou said in a message to the Telegram app.

“We know the process will be difficult, but we are determined to follow this path,” he said.

“This decision” strengthens our European ambitions, encourages us and strengthens our confidence that we are on the right path, “the Moldovan president added.

For his part, Foreign Minister Nikos Popescu spoke of a “historic day”.

“We are a European country, our language – Romanian – is the official language of the EU, we have a European history and a European democratic political system,” he wrote on Facebook.

The European Commission today recommended to the Member States to grant Moldova candidate status for membership in the European Union and to offer Georgia the “prospect” of one day joining the “27”.

This recommendation, as well as the recommendation to give the green light to Ukraine, will be discussed at the European summit on 23-24 June and the leaders of the 27 EU countries will have to decide unanimously.
