Two climate change activists threw soup at the protective glass in front of the world-famous 'Mona Lisa' painting at the Louvre museum in Paris on Sunday.
Video footage showed two women throwing soup at Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, to the amazement of onlookers.
“What is more important? Art or the right to a healthy and sustainable food system?” shouted the activists, speaking in French. They passed through a security barrier to get as close as possible to the painting and were taken away by Louvre security guards.
The activists represent the French organization “Riposte Alimentaire” (Food Response), which issued a statement saying the protest sought to highlight the need to protect the environment and food sources.
In recent years, many activists have targeted art to raise awareness about climate change.
In 2022, the protection in front of the “Mona Lisa” was also attacked with cream in a protest.
Other attempts included throwing soup at Vincent Van Gogh's “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery in London in October 2022, and the following month activists glued themselves to Goya's paintings at the Prado museum in Madrid.
