After several weeks of arrest, the US authorities decided to release Ricardo Spagni, the creator of the anonymous cryptocurrency Monero, from prison.
Ricardo Spagni was arrested in Nashville in early August at the request of the South African authorities. He is suspected of fraud while working as an IT manager at Cape Cookies.
According to law enforcement agencies, Spagni falsified payment documents – intercepted invoices from a supplier of goods and services in the field of information technology and overstated the amounts. The charges are not related to the Monero cryptocurrency itself.
“I am very glad that the American court released me. Together with my lawyers, I am actively working towards an early return to South Africa in order to finally deal with this case and charges. ” stressed Spain.
The lawyers of the creator of Monero noted that the African authorities have been conducting this case for more than ten years and Spagni has always diligently attended the court sessions, and also provided all the necessary information.
We will remind, in December 2019, Spagni left the post of the lead developer of Monero.
